  • Border Traffic:

Some days both truck and passenger traffic might be so bad that are not many things you can do to avoid it,
but there are still some common mistakes people make that can cost you an extra hour or so.

    What is causing backups:

    1) Truck traffic backed up; this happens more often then delays for regular traffic
    2) Passenger car and truck traffic backed up
    3) Bridge Closed because of an accident
    4) Construction on I-94

    Why does it happen:

    1) The most obvious is Customs/Immigration delays on the Canadian Site or an accident on the bridge
    2) Another bottleneck appears to be the bridge over the black river in Port Huron, which is only two lanes and local traffic from Water street joining the I-94 just before the black river bridge
    3) Slow moving truck traffic blocks the right lane of the I-94
    4) Non commercial traffic stay behind truck traffic in the right lane (RV and Campers)

    What to avoid:

    1) Getting stuck behind truck traffic in the right lane.
    2) Using the I-94 till the end if you don't have to go to Canada (use an alternative route)
    3) If you're pulling a camper or driving a RV, you don't want to get stuck behind a truck in the right lane.

    Alternative Routes:

Peace of mind if you have to go to Canada:

There are actually two entrance points to the bridge to Canada:

    1) Directly from the I-94
    2) By continuing past the I-94 "Exit to Canada" and turning right at the next traffic light and again right at the second traffic light and follow the sign(s) to Canada.
    3) If you make sure you have $ 1.50 in change, you can use the automated toll booth.[recommended]

Travelling   [north]   past   Port   Huron: [or going to Fort Gratiot]   [Birchwood Mall]

    1) Safest route:

    Coming from Detroit
    Use I-94 Wadhams exit
    Turn left onto Wadhames road
Continue on Wadhams road for about 20 minutes [55MPH]
After going down (literally) and over the black river bridge, turn right at the traffic light.
Continue on "North Road" and turn right on "Keewahdin rd" [traffic light]
Continue on "Keewahdin rd", past "STATE RD" and turn left when the road forks.
Turn left at the next traffic light (onto M-25) (and towards Lake Port) or past the light to visit Birchwood Mall.

    2) Faster route:

    Coming from Detroit
    Use I-94 exit to I-69
    Use I-69 Wadhams rd exit
    Turn right onto Wadhams rd
After going down (literally) and over the black river bridge, turn right at the traffic light.
Continue on North Road and turn right on Keewahdin rd [traffic light]
Continue on "Keewahdin rd", past "STATE RD" and turn left when the road forks.
Turn left at the next traffic light (onto M-25) (and towards Lake Port) or past the light to visit Birchwood Mall.

    3) I-69 Alternative:

    Coming from Flint
    Use I-69 Wadhams rd exit
    Turn left onto Wadhams rd
After going down (literally) and over the black river bridge, turn right at the traffic light.
Continue on North Road and turn right on Keewahdin rd [traffic light]
Continue on "Keewahdin rd", past "STATE RD" and turn left when the road forks.
Turn left at the next traffic light (onto M-25)  (and towards Lake Port) or past the light to visit Birchwood Mall.
